The extension of our area of benefit in May 2008 brought the long neglected Brunswick Square Gardens into our domain. This English Heritage Registered Georgian garden, which dates back to 1796, had seen very little investment since the site was refurbished by Camden Council in 2002/3.

At our 2008 AGM we launched the Friends of Brunswick Square (FOBS), since when we have seen improvements to the upkeep of the gardens and the adjacent verge, as well as the upgrading of footways throughout the square. FOBS have participated in the Open Garden Squares weekend every year since 2009 and the Brunswick Plane, planted in 1796 and reputed to be the second oldest London Plane tree in the capital, was honoured as one of the Great Trees of Britain. The FOBS Committee has worked tirelessly to organise regular public events in the gardens, helping to raise the profile of this previously neglected open space. Evidence of its efforts can be seen in the much improved central flower bed, a new flower bed opposite the entrance to Lansdowne Terrace and the installation of a water supply for the first time since the gardens were taken over by Camden in the 1970s. The latest symbol of their success has been the installation of three brilliantly designed interpretive boards, two of which tell the history of the square and its most notable former residents - a good example of effective collaboration between FOBS, the Marchmont Association and Camden Council.

FOBS also organised a fantastic community festival to commemorate the bicentenary of the publication of Emma by Jane Austen, which took place in the gardens and at other venues in the vicinity, including Goodenough College and the Foundling Museum. Details of all events organised by FOBS in Brunswick Square Gardens are posted on the garden railings and on the FOBS website (link below), where you should also look out for notices of their regular Saturday morning volunteer gardening sessions.

New members are always welcome, so if you want to get involved you can register your interest at one of the FOBS events or contact them via the link to their web site, below.
